Pitchfork: You mentioned that you usually have a clear idea of what you’re trying to do with a solo album. What were you trying to do with Candylion?

Gruff Rhys: I had a couple of weeks off, so I went again to my friend Gorwel Owen’s house here in Wales. I was basically trying to base a whole album around songs written on my acoustic guitar. The centerpiece of every song is the same acoustic guitar. So it’s a very stripped-down record, and it turned out really sweet. And it’s been a real pleasure going around playing it live. I’ve been singing with a woman called Lisa Jens. She’s from my hometown, and she’s an old family friend. We’ve been traveling around doing shows, and it’s been pretty interesting doing something completely different, something very quiet. We’ve been really happy with the shows.
